Medical and educational support for the Bakola of south Cameroon

A health worker and a hall of residence for the village of Nabonzouondi

When we visited the Bakola encampment of Nabonzouondi (March 2019 ICRA mission in south Cameroon), its inhabitants mentioned a number of things that were needed if they were to continue living in the forest.

Health worker training A member of the Bakola community, Anne-Marie is a very active, dynamic woman who has volunteered to serve as a health worker. The training course will take six months at a cost of 30,000 CFA francs, plus the purchase of the equipment needed for the task. The total budget is 250,000 CFA francs (about 400 €). The program will be monitored by Paul Félix Mimboh, from CERAD, who teaches in a nearby village.

A hall of residence for the pupils of the encampment  : The people of Nabonzouondin wish to send their children to a school in a village by the side of the Lolodorf dirt road, a seven-kilometer hike.It is a strenuous, hilly walk, too much for the children (18 of them at the moment) to travel there and back every day. The community owns some land by the roadside, where they would like to build a concrete residential hall for the children to sleep in on weekdays when the school is open. The budget reaches a million CFA francs (about 1,600 €). Paul Félix would also monitor this part of the project (construction and schooling).
