Our field programs

With its two special departments, AKASSA (Acting in favour of forgotten peoples) and FMCA (World Fund for the preservation of indigenous cultures), ICRA funds various field programmes in order to to:

• set up — together with indigenous populations and only at their request — assistance programs for nutritional, educational, medical and health self-sufficiency. These programs are managed by the communities and aim at their greater autonomy, so they can keep their original way of life and develop at their own pace.

• support initiatives — emanating from indigenous communities — to map, protect and promote indigenous memories and cultures, and thus encourage the transmission of their cultural heritage, their languages and their oral traditions. These programs must also constitute a hub for a better knowledge and conservation of the cultural heritage of mankind, and contribute to a renewal of the dialogue between civilizations.

Urgent actions

Our urgent actions, in particular our awareness and petition campaigns, and our letters to governments and embassies, often have a decisive impact.

With their help, we have been able to obtain the demarcation of Toromono land in Bolivia, to bring justice to the Guarani of Brazil whose lands were endangered by the sugarcane industry, to delay several dam projects threatening Indians in Xingu and the Embera Katio of Colombia, to defend the Punan of Sarawak against the timber industry, and to ensure the protection of Ashininka ancestral knowledge in Peru against the dangers of biopiracy.
