A secular school for the Naga village of Thangnoknui in Burma

The Nagas live in the mountains along the India-Myanmar border. Long scarred by conflict between supporters of Nagaland self-governance or independence and the governments of India and Myanmar, and by the fratricidal conflicts between warring factions, the Naga mountains are now in a relative state of peacefulness. On the Indian side, children attend Evangelical schools, often run by Baptists, who are ubiquitous in Indian Nagaland. In Myanmar, schools are non-existent as the government does not make a priority of educating these remote populations.  For several years now, and thanks to your sponsorship, we have been able to offer schooling to about two dozen young Khiamnungan Nagas from Myanmar on the Indian side of the border. They are hosted by Naga families in Indian Nagaland. Today, Pashen, village chief of Thangnokniu, in the Patkai mountains of Burma, is urgently appealing, through the voice of Visier Sanyu, for Thangnokniu to be endowed with a secular school, which would give every child in the village access to basic education. This challenge has now been met with the construction of a school building on the model of traditional Khiamnungan Naga constructions, partly funded by ICRA Suisse, the 4thAnako Ethnographic Film Festival, in which Visier Sanyu was able to take part, and the associations working for the Naga people.

The people in charge : Visier Sanyu Meyasetsu, Chief Pashen of Thangnokniu village

Goals
• To build a secular school on a traditional model right in the middle of Thangnokniu village,
• To fund the monthly salaries of two Naga teachers,
• To support the school and guarantee the salaries in the long term,
• To consider hiring two additional teachers.
